THE HISTORY

Art in the Park began as a mere 10 to 12 booths in 1980 with mostly gallery members as exhibitors.  As a non-profit organization, the funds generated, over & above expenses, were used to provide scholarships for post-secondary art students.  As the years went by, Art in the Park continued to grow and expand, improve and become known.

THE SETTING

Situated on the shores of Lake Huron in the small ‘burb’ of Brights Grove, just outside Sarnia, the Gallery in the Grove is situated on the 2nd floor of the historic Faethorne House, circa 1875.  The gallery ‘sits’ nestled amongst the giant oaks of Wildwood Park.... a beautiful well-treed park that became a magnificent setting for our venue and which all visitors agree adds much to the ambience of the day!

THE EVENT

In 2004, with a much-needed & earned rest for the conveners of Art in the Park of many years, a new team took on this commitment to convene.  With a view to ‘returning to our roots’ the event, in 2005, was given the formal name of The Villages of Art in the Park - consisting of the East Range & West Wind Villages (please see the historical data of the building elsewhere on this website).

Always held the first Saturday after Labour Day each September, our event has evolved into a spectacularly successful venue where exhibitors and visitors alike come from all over Southwestern Ontario....including the Greater Toronto areas, Ottawa and beyond and number in the thousands.

THE DAY IN 2007

Having rained only twice in our 27 year history, we feel we’ve chosen a great time of year for this event and 2007 was one of the best of the best of Art in the Park ever..... with 18 new never-exhibited-before vendors & an awesome crowd on a perfect day.

As you stroll amongst our artisans situated throughout the park, you also can enjoy our Country Kitchen...with homemade baking & preserves, various house & outdoor plants & grasses; coffee & muffins and much more. While the Food Court does a thriving business with our great burgers, hotdogs & drinks....& don’t forget our unforgettable homemade ice cream truck. (The ice cream is homemade, not the truck!) And, last but not least, we had a tremendously popular face painting booth for the kids.

And certainly a  highlight of the day, is the Opening Reception in the  Gallery itself for our September Exhibition.  As well, the library holds its’ annual much-anticipated book sale.

THE EXHIBITORS

From a small beginning of only about ten vendors, The Villages of Art in the Park now proudly boasts over 100 exhibitors handpicked thru our juried application process.

With over 15 categories that handcrafted items are assigned to, we ensure that there is, at all times, a wide variety of items  for our visitors/clients that are unique, one-of-a-kind and high quality.

Each year a number of spots are kept aside for new artisans as we endeavour to always keep pace with the ever-changing climate of this type of venue and bring refreshing new change.

As we are one of the very few, if not only, solely volunteer-run galleries in Southwestern Ontario, our focus is on art, but our mandate is to promote all artisans at our showcase and sale.

As each individual category reaches its’ assigned quota in regard to numbers of exhibitors doing the same type of work, our applicants go on a ‘waiting list’ for cancellations, etc.

This ensures that all types and varieties of work are highlighted and no one category dominates.

The best!

Our Picnic Pavilion in the West Wind Village has, for many years, been the site of The Sarnia Artists Workshop, a group of anywhere up to 20 artists, who show & sell their artwork – always highly successful & well sought after.

Our many exhibitors who return to us, offer new work and designs each year in their particular fields using their experience from previous years and  expertise in their work.

LOOKING AHEAD

2008 ......also promises to be a banner year!  Already, we have acquired a small number of spaces that will be available for 2008 exhibitors that have hydro hookups...which opens up a whole new avenue to showcase our artisans!

We are proud to announce that Gallery in the Grove has awarded over $77,000 in post-secondary scholarships to students.

The committee is also looking at other new, innovative ideas (coming in the new year) to make

2008 JUST GREAT
