Laura Kreviazuk is a mixed-media Sarnia-based artist with a degree in Studio Art from the University of Guelph. Following graduation, she relocated to Toronto where she co-founded the VSVSVS studio collective and artist-run centre. During this time, Kreviazuk continued to develop her personal drawing language exploring scale and expressive mark making in charcoal and graphite on paper. Traditionally working large in scale, Kreviazuk’s immersive drawings transport her viewers into unexpected places and experiences, often reflecting a world teetering between stability and chaos. Her work is based on a complex collection of source material, documentation and memory. She describes her drawings as ever-changing. “The work evolves through a constant process of erasure and revision of visual layering; a repeated dialogue between image and instinct, capturing the exchange of energy between myself and the materials I am using.” “There is an exciting, permissive immediacy to drawing. It yields to instinctive editing while retaining a trail of the artistic progress.” Kreviazuk’s new body of work embodies a psychological shift. Experiencing a recent illumination has sparked an interest in exploring the dissolution and deconstruction of the unconscious mind. Her drawings suggest the shattering of false perceptions through an explosion of linear perspective while letting the light trickle through. Her drawings emit an expansive energy through their ephemeral and ethereal nature.
Kreviazuk currently resides in Sarnia, Ontario where she is dedicated to a full-time rigorous studio practice. Locally, her work has been exhibited at the Judith & Alix Norman Gallery and in Sarnia’s Dreamhome. “I am very excited to be exhibiting this body of work locally beside that of Laura Kreviazuk’s” Manzano Aris states. “I think our artwork compliments each other in that we both use line, space and form to lay out our (abstract) compositions but we approach scale and medium very differently which makes for a nice contrast.” Kreviazuk has expressed her excitement to have her work displayed alongside Laura Manzaro Arias. “I have always felt connected and inspired by Laura’s Manzano Arias’ work. I love how we both explore spatial play with fragmented imagery, formal elements and intense contrast. I think they will really complement each other in the Gallery space and generate stimulating conversations around them. Instagram: @laurakreviazuk Facebook: Laura Kreviazuk Artist Page |
