LEONARD SEGALL
Artistic Explorations
Intimate Portraits: Conservation @ Hickory Creek

Picture
Leonard Segall
This exhibition presents photos made during two years of exploration on the woodlot named Conservation @ Hickory Creek, owned by Walter and Mary Petrsychuk. The work is inspired by Eliot Porter’s “Intimate Landscapes” and Freeman Patterson’s “The Garden”. These books feature carefully composed colour photographs that convey the authors’ personal feelings for their natural environments.

My childhood home was located in a forest on the slope between the Richelieu River and Mont. St.-Hilaire in Québec. My earliest memories are of maple, oak, and beech trees; dogtooth violets, bloodroot, jack-in the pulpit and trillium wildflowers; and creeks with beds of clay and stones.  Conservation @ Hickory Creek with its 40 acres, and a 70 foot drop from the top of the bank, offers wide vistas and intimate specialized habitats which evoke the mountainside forest of my youth.

The photographs in this exhibition were created with a Nikon D800 camera, processed in Camera Raw and Photoshop software, printed with a Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 printer on Moab Juniper Baryta Rag 305 paper, and framed with archival materials by the artist.
